Statement On The Twelfth Anniversary Of The September 11 Terrorist Attacks By His Excellency Namık Tan

Vaşington Büyükelçiliği 11.09.2013

On the twelfth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, we pay tribute to the precious memories of the innocent lives that perished in one of the most heinous crimes in history. Our hearts go out to the relatives, friends and loved ones of the men, women and children who were tragically taken away from us and to all the American people who still mourn their losses.

Among nationals from more than 90 countries, Mr. Zühtü İbiş, a Turkish citizen also passed away in the attack against World Trade Center in New York City. The cowardly acts committed twelve years ago today will always remain as a solemn and tragic reminder of the threat posed by the scourge of terrorism.

No cause can justify terrorism, for nothing is more valuable than human life and dignity.

Few other countries can relate to what the people of the United States went through in the wake of these dastardly attacks as profoundly as Turkey does. As a country which lost countless innocent citizens to terror, we know how deeply the United States was scarred on 9/11 and how difficult it is to overcome the pain, anger and frustration inflicted on this solemn day.

However, we also know that we have the necessary strength and determination to carry on and build a more secure, prosperous and stable environment for ourselves, our friends and allies. Above all, we know that we are not alone in this quest. United States and Turkey have always stood shoulder to shoulder in the fight against terrorism. This solidarity and cooperation have constantly grown in the wake of the terrorist attacks on 9/11. We are confident that the robust friendship, partnership and alliance between Turkey and United States will help us achieve a safer future for all the international community. We owe this to all the innocent lives that were lost in 9/11 and in many other terrorist attacks in the world.
